PET SAFETY MONTH: 30 tips in 30 days that can save your pet's life - Tip #27

Now that you've found one or more high quality pup or kitty foods with the help of AAFCO and a close read of the ingredient list, how much should you feed pup or kitty?

Well, asking the average pet is certainly not going to give you the correct answer because many could be nicknamed "The Black Hole" if you did.

And we know that excess weight in pets is just as bad as it is in humans. But how do we know what is excess?

World Small Animal Veterinary Assocation has a series of charts (in multiple languages should you need) of everything from assessing muscle condition to caloric needs for both dogs and cats: https://wsava.org/nutrition-toolkit The easiest one to use, we find, is the "Body Condition Score" which will instantly tell you if pup or kitty is, well, too fat (or skinny).

Here's the one for pups (yes, there is one for cats, too). If pup is not where he should be, you know exactly what to do.
